Sold Vast listed 17th century chateau with magnificent decoration in the Nièvre department

This estate is located near the forests of Morvan, 210 km (130 miles) away in the south of Paris (with 180 km, 112 miles, of motorway), 35 km (22 miles) from a railway station and 5 km (3 miles) from shops. It is composed of a 17th century chateau, listed as a Historic Monument (M.H.) framed by 4 square pavilions and surrounded by many outbuildings on 120 ha (296 acres) of grounds.

The chateau was built between 1672 and 1681 by the Marquis de Charnisay, captain of King Louis XIV's armies. The arrival is through a long avenue first edged by lime trees, then by vast lawns framed by large outbuildings, leading to the main courtyard of the chateau.

The chateau and its outbuildings have a noble layout. It is surrounded by 4 square pavilions with high roof. The western front side overlooks the main courtyard and a moat. It features a central pediment capped by a dome and a lantern, regular windows with small panes, roughcast stone walls, a slate roof with beautiful bull's-eye windows. The chateau is in good condition and benefits from a recent full interior restoration providing perfect conveniences and exceptional decoration with countless period details.

The interior space (1 500 sq. mt., 16 150 sq. ft. plus the cellars) is distributed among 3 main levels. On the ground floor, the splendid entrance hall is located in the centre of the building, thus behind the pediment. The hall has a double height and features a gallery with wrought iron railing in its upper part, a stone floor, a remarkable painted ceiling dating from the 17th century, a Régence fireplace and a 18th century painting of King Louis XIV.

The entrance hall gives access to the left part of the chateau through a double door opening onto a first main reception room (84 sq. mt., 904 sq. ft.). This room is lighted by 3 windows on the western side and 3 windows on the eastern side and features a monumental carded wood fireplace, Louis XIV wainscotting with many portraits, a decorated and gilded French ceiling, a tiled floor and a 18th century yellow silk damask.

The dining room (36 sq. mt., 387 sq. ft.) is vaulted and features superb 18th century paintings, a Louis XV fireplace and a flagstone floor.

This part of the chateau also includes a kitchen, a hall with an elevator, a second entrance with marble floor and a stone staircase leading upstairs.

The right part of the ground floor includes a 2nd main reception room (83 sq. mt., 893 sq. ft.) lighted by 3 windows on the western side and 3 windows on the eastern side. This room features a parquet floor, a remarkable ceiling, a Louis XVI marble fireplace, wainscotting, 4 superb double doors. The library room features an inlaid door dating from 1613, a Louis XIV fireplace, a French ceiling and 19th century inlaid bookcases. This part of the chateau also includes 2 studies, 2 further entrance halls, one of which with a beautiful wooden staircase, and another service staircase.

The 2 upper floors distributes 11 bedrooms decorated with many period details and 8 bathrooms.

Interior views

The underground floor distributes a vaulted wine cellar, several other vaulted cellars and 2 boiler rooms.

One of the 4 square pavilions is a chapel with vaulted ceiling, a remarkable altar and 18th century paintings.

The other outbuildings include 2 long buildings (33 × 7 mt., 108 × 23 ft.) with French ceilings and period fireplaces, a big round dovecote, a building used as garages, a lovely caretaker's house and 3 further spaces suitable for conversion into accommodations.

The landscaped grounds feature a pagoda, a bird house, an ice house, a greenhouse, a splendid swimming pool with pool house and 3 terraces with view of the surrounding forests. The rest of the 120 ha (296 acres) of grounds represents meadows and woods.

Its architecture and decoration make this masterpiece one of the most remarkable landmarks of Burgundy...
