The abbey is one of the oldest of the Anjou region: it was founded during the 6th century on the location of an ancient Gallo-Roman villa. It went through the Norman invasions and the Hundred Years War. Joan of Arc stopped there in 1429. The abbey has been rebuilt during the 17th century. During the Revolution, the property was sold away and it is not before the 19th century that monks settle back and bring the abbey back to life again.
Today, most of the 17th century buildings and the 12th-13th centuries chapel can be admired. Only the western side remains from the ancient 11th century building, with a Carolingian cross that is the symbol of the abbey.
